All of my friends consider me an excellent cook, my secret is fresh herbs .I have a few types of herbs that I grow on my small patio. A five star restaurant that I frequent when my budget allows has its own green house attached to the kitchen used to grow their own herbs. While a good cookbook will help you improve your cooking skills, this one will do even more.

The author leads a great discussion on the different types of herbs and what is needed to successfully grow them. Points discussed include how to plant, watering, sunlight and other how to care information. Just as importantly he talks about how to harvest them and use the herbs to their best advantage.

The book showed me how I could improve some on my current set up and I see some suggestions on new plants to add to my stock. There are also some very nice sample recipes.

A great book for both the beginner and experience grower

I love to use fresh herbs in my cooking, but they can be very expensive at the grocery store. And while I do raise a fairly extensive selection of herbs outdoors each year, that doesn't help much 7+ months of the year here in Vermont, so I, like many others in colder climates, often keep a pot or two of favorites indoors. Author John Green takes indoor herb gardening a step further in 7 Secrets to Your Successful Indoor Herb Garden (Your Herb Garden), growing a wide selection of culinary herbs and providing advice on everything from which herbs to grow to where to find the best deals on pots & grow lights. Whether you are a first time indoor gardener or an old hand, you'll find much worth reading in these pages.

John has included a nice interactive Table of Contents accessible from the Kindle menu, along with plenty of outside links to further information and resources. The photographs included are either his own or those he uses with permission, carefully documented. Readers will find this an easy to use resource.

These indoor plant lights are relatively inexpensive, provide good quality light and come with some added features that are good for keeping difficult to grow plants. For example, there is a moisture tray with raised studs to keep your plant above excess water. This is very good for orchids because it provides humidiy without having your plants sit in the water. Also, you can raise and lower the height of the light within limits. In addition, this unit has a moisture probe that you can push down into the soil or growing medium at different depths. When the plant needs to be watered an indicator light will tell you. By varying the depth of the probe, you are measuring for different degrees of dryness. Once you get the depth worked out, you are in business for that particular species of plant.

One of the poor design features of this unit is the timer. Interestingly, you need to plug it in at dawn to take advantage of the seasonal light cycle. In the manual, they suggest resetting the season on the first day of each season and plugging it in at sunrise. This isn't exactly covenient or well thought out. The probe also is bit light and has a short wire. A little extra slack would be very nice as would a heavier duty probe.

For specimen plants like African violets, miniature orchids and others that are difficult to grow, these things are great and cheap enough to leave in an office environment without worrying. The light is also very nice for a bedroom specimen plant and not bright enough from a distance to interfere with sleep. These lights also cast enough periphery light to be other plants nearby, if necessary. I sometimes do that when a particular plant is not blooming.

I have several of these and they are really a nice addition to the house. My house is a bit dark and this is a great way to add some additional light and a natural accident. The colors of flowers are also particularly vivid under this type of spectrum. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you pick a few of these up. They also make great gifts.

I LOVE these lights! I was skeptical at first but am back today to order yet another one. Do you have a dark room with no windows or just a dark corner of your house, put one of these on any table and viola!

Here's how it works:

Once you plug it in and set the season, winter, spring, summer or fall it's set. The light turns on and off after approx 12 hours on the spring setting, it will cycle through and go to summer then fall and winter and shortening the length of light hours to simulate sunlight. (just push the button back to spring if you want to grow violets)

Also there is a metal prong attached you can pop into your pot and it will tell you when you need to water by how far you put it in the soil,a light flashes on the back of the arm base when it's time to water. The prong is several inches long so push it all the way down for cactus, yes, these are working great for my cactus by keeping the light only 1-3 inches above the plant, or down just a tiny bit for a water loving plant like a peace lily. I can grow African violets like a champ by keeping it on the spring or summer setting. Oh, and you can fill the base with an inch or so of water if you want to create some humidity, just sit your pot on the raised bumps and keep the water below them. Tells you when to water, adds humidity if you want (works great for orchids) turns off and on automatically. It's a winner all around in my opinion. I bought four of these and am back for my fifth today. A nice plant on a stand with this light brightens the gloomiest corner. These are packaged well and would be a wonderful gift!

I am a very good gardener, but even I have my limits with indoor gardening. For years I have never understood what people like about African Violets - those pink, white, purple little plants with fuzzy leaves that some people keep in colonies on their desks and window sills. They fuss over them, filter their water, dust their leaves, tweeze off old flowers and talk to them. I mean what do you say about plants with names like Itty Bit, Cute as a Bug, Ma's Easter Corsage and Space Babies?

The Intelligent Plant Light has changed my view of them forever. You cannot fail with this item unless you water your plants with coffee and use them for ash trays. This thing moniters their humidity, light, water and blooming with a new kind of cool light. Give this to your friends who swear they have black thumbs. I now am hooked and have over 20 violets with wack-a-doo names, as well as a coleus, several geraniums and even an impatiens held over from the summer and too pretty to throw away. TRY IT!

I was expectin AT LEAST a thin plastic pan and find that these are VERY CHEAPLY MADE pressed SOMETHING. The top is SO THIN , I am afraid I will break it when I touch it. I was looking for a pan to use time and time again. Dont think this is it. The size is PERFECT for what I need and if it were made to last ,IT WOULB BE PERFECT. I wish there would have been a better description of this item. I never would've purchased.It would be good for single use.

I purchased this product at Lowe's a few weeks ago. Needless to say, I wasn't expecting too much, I was mainly looking for a container to start some vegetable and herb seeds in. After seeing that this kit came with 6 different seeds, I decided I would not purchase any other seed packets and would see how and if these grew.

After planting the seeds properly and placing the planter on a sunny windowsill, I covered the tray with the included plastic lid to retain moisture. It worked just as described and all the seeds that I had planted sprouted within days. My plants are about 4 weeks old now, and they all seem to be growing great and are healthy.

This product was a great buy, especially for the price. I got way more than I was expecting! The seeds seem to be of great quality and turned into healthy plants, and the tray is the perfect size for starting out your seedlings. The durable plastic is reusable to grow more after your plants are ready to be moved into bigger pots. Also, the included cover retains moisture as it should which significantly helps with seed germination.

This is definitely worth the money!

I was trying to decide whether buying my own pots and seeds would be cheaper. Nope. Thats why I bought this and it saves space by having that stacking stand thing. Great little product. I potted them up last night, comes with soil that you add water too and you have more soil that you can imagine. Very pleased. And box said they are gauranteed to grow - fantasic!

i still have 3 of the pots that the herbs are doing good. I have used some of the basil and thyme for dressings. I was disappointed that there were no holes in the pots, but it may not have been necessary for clay pots to have holes since they are porous, just not what I am used to. Also, the soil reminded me wet saw dust and not soil at all. I was not sure how much to water them and I overwatered one of them to where the water was standing on the top and went to tip it over slightly to drain the water off and the whole thing came out ... I just used some of my potting soil in it and put some more seeds in to grow and they never did grow - it was the cilantro. The chives never did come up. There was supposed to be enough seeds for a couple of plantings, but that is not what I received. It is a really sturdy stand and looks pretty on the counter in the kitchen. I would not recommend it.
